 'Consent of rapist's consent to impotence removed from proposed law'

  • The federal cabinet has removed the condition of obtaining the consent of the rapist from the proposed law.
  • A meeting of the Federal Cabinet was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Imran Khan in which the law on punishment of rape offenders and disqualification of the offender was also considered among other issues.
  • According to sources, it was decided in the cabinet meeting that his consent would not be sought to disqualify the rapist. Earlier, Section 376 of the proposed law on rape cases included the condition of his consent to disqualify the rapist.
  • Sources said that under the new law, the perpetrators of rape cases will be sentenced to life imprisonment as well as impotence and the rapist will be impotent through chemicals or drugs through a notified board.
  • According to sources, under the proposed law, police and government employees who fail to investigate and provide false information in rape cases will also face a three-year sentence and a fine.
  • On the other hand, President Arif Ali has also approved the Anti-Rape Ordinance 2020.
  • According to a presidential statement, the ordinance will help in expeditious disposal of cases of sexual abuse against women and children and under the ordinance, special courts will be set up across the country for speedy trial of rape accused.
