US senators announce arms embargo on UAE

US senators oppose US President Donald Trump's sale of more than 23 23 billion worth of weapons to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Democrats Senator Bob Menendez, Chris Murphy and Trump's own Republican Senator Rand Paul have said they will legislate to stop the US president from selling more than 23 23 billion worth of weapons to the UAE.

In the United States, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House of Representatives (Lower House) Foreign Affairs Committee have the power to review and prevent arms sales.

U.S. senators fear that such a large-scale arms sale could upset the balance of power in the Middle East.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo briefed members of Congress last week on the deal.
Under the agreement, the United States will sell F-35 fighter jets, drones, surface-to-air missiles and other weapons to the UAE.

It should be noted that just a few days after the UAE established relations with Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had opposed this possible deal between the United States and the UAE.

According to the report, Israel has opposed the sale of F-35 aircraft to the United Arab Emirates in order to maintain its air superiority in the Middle East.
