On the day of Eid, the Afghan president announced the release of 500 Taliban prisoners

  • KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai has announced the release of 500 Taliban prisoners on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha.

  • Addressing the nation on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani ordered the release of Taliban prisoners in response to the Taliban's announcement of a ceasefire during Eid.

  • Ashraf Ghani said he hoped the Taliban would take the ceasefire announcement further.

  • The Afghan president said the prisoners would be released in the next four days and that the 500 Taliban prisoners to be released were not on the list provided by the Taliban to the government.

  • The Afghan president said that 400 prisoners on the list provided by the Taliban were involved in serious crimes and that he did not have the authority to release them as president, so he would consult the jirga and Afghan tribes on the matter.

  • He added that the Afghan government has a strong position in both war and peace.

Taliban spokesman's statement
  • On the other hand, Afghan Taliban spokesman Sohail Shaheen said that the Taliban had completed the release of 1,000 prisoners as per the agreement reached with the United States.

  • In a statement released on Twitter, Shaheen said that the Taliban had released 82 more prisoners on Thursday, bringing the number of those released to 1,005.
