Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption;-otgnewsupdate

KUALA LUMPUR: A former Malaysian prime minister has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in a long-running corruption case.

Najib Razzaq was accused of embezzling  1 billion from the Malaysia Broad Development (OneMDB) government project. Finalizing the scam, the court indicted him, but Najib, 67, was acquitted on a restraining order and given the right to appeal.

Following the ruling by the Kuala Lumpur High Court, Razzaq said he was not satisfied with the verdict as only one judge had ruled and he still had the right to appeal to prove his good name.

He is accused of transferring nearly  1 billion from his personal account to SRC International, a consortium affiliated with OneMDB, and has been charged with seven counts of corruption.

Najib Razzaq has since been fined  49 million and sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of abuse of power. It is alleged that Najib Razzaq played a direct role in the scandal.

On the other hand, a large number of supporters of the former prime minister gathered outside the court and chanted slogans in his favor.
