Catch locusts and take money, federal government's new plan ready-otgnewsupdate

The federal government has developed a plan to make biocompost fertilizer from locusts.

A statement issued by the Ministry of National Food Security said that the plan to make locust heart compost is in the approval stage and the locust heart will be converted into bio-compost fertilizer.
The ministry said the project would provide employment to local people, make fertilizer and control locusts.
According to the announcement, locusts collected by locals will be converted into bio-compost, locust manure will contain 9% nitrogen and 7% phosphorus, locust heart will become a high organic fertilizer which will be used in the agricultural sector.
The statement said that marketing and distribution mechanism would also be set up to promote the use of organic fertilizers while testing of the pilot project would be carried out in Cholistan and Thar.
According to the announcement, locust collection centers will be set up in Bahawalpur, Umerkot, Lakki Marwat, Kharan Dryland Center of Balochistan, Turbat, Lasbela and Khuzdar.
Fertilizer made from locusts will improve crop yields by 10 to 15 percent, while the use of chemical fertilizers will be reduced by 25 percent, the statement said.
According to the announcement, in the first year of the project, fertilizer worth Rs. 1 billion will be produced. Out of 100,000 tons of locusts, 70,000 tons of fertilizer will be produced. Under this project, an average family can earn Rs. 6,000 per month.
It may be recalled that locusts in different districts of the country have inflicted loss of millions of rupees on farmers by attacking crops while NDMA has sprayed several hectares of land but locust attacks are continuing.
On the other hand, the American magazine Bloomberg has warned in a report that a locust heart attack in Pakistan could prove to be a bigger economic threat than the corona virus.
