A PIA passenger plane crashed in Karachi, killing is feared - Otgnewsupdate

KARACHI: A Pakistan International Airlines flight from Lahore to Karachi on Friday crashed near Jinnah International Airport, according to Civil Aviation Authority sources.

The plane was carrying 97 people, including 85 passengers and 12 crew members

The Civil Aviation Authority said that PIA flight PK8303 from Lahore was about to land in Karachi when it crashed in the area of   Jinnah Garden near Model Colony in Malir.

Sindh Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that relief activities were underway and statistics on the incident could not be provided yet.

Sindh Health Minister Azra Pechoho said 11 bodies and six injured were brought to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center in Karachi.

He said that DNA tests were being conducted on the bodies and added that the authorities were satisfied with the situation of JPMC.

He added that an emergency has been declared in all the hospitals in the city.

Among the several survivors is Bank of Punjab President Zafar Masood, according to Geo News.

Earlier, Jinnah Hospital Director Dr Simin Jamali told the media that the bodies of two men and six women had been brought to the hospital so far.

Six injured have also been brought to the hospital, he said, adding that most of the injured have been burnt.

The captain of the plane had made a May Day call just before the crash and according to the audio on Geo News, the pilot could be clearly heard saying that the plane had lost its engines.

The plane reportedly had a problem with its landing gear, which unfortunately caused it. CAA sources said that the communication was cut off from the plane one minute before it landed.

Pakistan Army Quick Reaction Force troops are being formed and Pakistan Rangers Sindh reached the spot immediately after assisting the civil administration in relief and rescue efforts.

Rescue workers encountered various obstacles in the rescue operation as the roads were narrow and a large crowd had gathered near the scene.

The plane crashed, damaging several houses in the area. Black smoke could be seen from a distance at the crash site.
